The Grip of Alcohol Addiction
Tom Holland, the Hollywood actor, recently opened up about his battle with alcohol addiction, expressing that becoming sober has been “the best thing I’ve ever done” after realizing he had become “enslaved” to alcohol.
While the past year has been a journey of facing difficult issues, Holland has found support from his girlfriend and Spider-Man co-star, Zendaya.
In a recent interview on the Smartless podcast, he expressed his gratitude for having Zendaya in his life, acknowledging that he is “lucky” to have her support.
In another podcast episode on “On Purpose with Jay Shetty” on Monday, July 10, Holland shared that his path to sobriety began after a particularly “boozy” Christmas last year. He realized the extent of his struggle during dry January when thoughts of consuming alcohol consumed him, which deeply frightened him.
This led him to introspect and acknowledge, “Wow, maybe I have a little bit of an alcohol thing.”
As a result, he extended his sobriety beyond January, even though it was a challenging decision for him. He faced difficulties in social settings and grappled with the idea of being enslaved by alcohol.
Demanding an answer, Holland questioned himself, “Why am I enslaved to this drink? Why am I so obsessed by the idea of having this drink?”
He set a goal of six months without alcohol and successfully achieved it on his 27th birthday, June 1, describing this time as “the happiest I’ve ever been in my life.”
Reflecting on the positive changes he experienced after giving up alcohol, he noted, “I could sleep better. I could handle problems better. Things that would go wrong on set, that would normally set me off, I could take in my stride. I had such better mental clarity. I felt healthier, I felt fitter.”
Embracing his truth, he openly admitted, “I was definitely addicted to alcohol. I’m not shying away from that at all.”
Additionally, his journey to sobriety has influenced other aspects of his life. He distanced himself from the rugby community, recognizing its heavy focus on alcohol consumption. Moreover, Holland’s sobriety has inspired his mother to embark on her own journey of sobriety, which has had a profound impact on her well-being.
Describing the transformation, he expressed, “I can’t believe the difference that I feel from not drinking. Yeah, I feel amazing.”
